Struggle with Freedom

Since moving to the farm, we have enjoyed the opportunities that living with space surrounding you has to offer.

We even decided that it would be great to have chickens.

Mind you, we knew very little about raising chickens.

But, after doing my home work and finding a cheap chicken coop on Craig's list, we took the plunge.

The coop we bought is really cute, but is equally as small.

We thought it would be a great starter coop, especially since we wanted to start off on this journey slowly.

We bought 4 baby chicks, although the coop we have really should house 2-3 birds.

Honestly, we didn't have much faith in our chicken raising ability and thought that surely they wouldn't all survive.

But, they have!

Now enters my dilemma of feeling sorry for our poor, sweet chickens being squished in their coop.

We decided to try letting them out to graze in the yard for a bit.

Mind you, we have no fence to keep them in and there are various dogs, including our own, who are in the same yard at any given time of the day.

I know, I know....chickens roam yards all day long.
I've seen it with my own two eyes.

But, these were MY chickens, MY babies!

This momma's heart was a nervous wreck when Mike opened the hatch.

Would they wander away?

How would the dogs react?

Would they ever come back to the safety of their cozy little home?

Then, I noticed something that I did not quite expect.

While they enjoyed the freedom, they were overly cautious about leaving the coop.

Our sweet babies never left about a 3 foot diameter away from their comfort zone.

In fact, one of our roosters, almost immediately headed straight back into the coop.

There he was. The world at his open doorstep. Yet, he chose to remain in the confines of his comfortable home.

Our experience with our chickens this afternoon made me think.

I thought of many correlations between the chickens and their experience alongside our experience with our walk with the Lord.

So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17

For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1

What has you imprisoned?

Is God calling you to step out of your comfort zone?

Take that leap.

Walk out of that cage.

And do not fear.

For the Lord will provide.

Rest in His goodness!

(By the way, my chicken babies are all snug in their coop for the night.)

But, they will enjoy their freedom again tomorrow!

Garden Goodies

We were blessed with a huge bag full of okra last week.

We love okra!!

The kids and I jumped on the opportunity to get some of the garden goodies into our freezer so that we can enjoy them throughout the year.

Time to trim the ends and rinse the okra before blanching them.

After the blanching process, it's time for the okra pods to take an ice bath.

After cooling down, the pods lay on a towel to dry off a bit.

It's time for the smaller okra pods to meet their destiny in small freezer bags.

Then, the larger pods are sliced to be later pulled from the freezer to enjoy some delicious fried okra. (my personal favorite)

And, of course, after all of that work, we were all craving some fresh okra right then.

So, what did we enjoy with our supper that night?

Fried okra, of course!

Yummy!

And she's off...

It seems like yesterday that Abby was watching Barney and playing with Barbies.

But, yesterday we all went to help Abby move into her 1st dorm room.

We are so excited to see how God is going to work in and through Abby over the next 4 years.

Abby, welcome to your 2nd home for the next few years.

May your college experience be full of fun, friends and a deeper walk with the Lord.

We love you and we are so proud of you!

Museum Time

We recently made a visit to the Natural Science Museum where they are hosting a wonderful dinosaur exhibit.

The kids and I had a great time exploring and learning some fun dinosaur facts.

Since Bennett, Maylee and Sam David will be homeschooled this year, we decided that our trip to the museum would be our 1st field trip of the year.

What a great way to get our school year started!!

Looking forward to many more adventures along the way!
